Psychological Medicine

The Section was established as the "Department of Psychological Medicine" in 1948/9. In August 2002, as part of the restructuring of the Faculty of Medicine, the department joined forces with colleagues in the Section of Public Health & Health Policy and Section of General Practice and Primary Care to form the Division of Community Based Sciences. The name "Psychological Medicine" was adopted to reflect the Department's commitment to the psychological sciences relevant to medicine - at that time, Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry. That early commitment has been maintained so that the Section now also includes staff with expertise in behavioural medicine, neuropsychology, health psychology, and medical sociology. The present-day Section of Psychological Medicine therefore embodies and extends the founding ethos of the original department.

Our aim is to promote well-being through better understanding and treatment of mental health problems. We achieve this through the work of our two research groups and one educational institute.
