Psychological Medicine

About us

Glasow Uni tower

The Section of Psychological Medicine is a member of the Medical Faculty's Division of Community Based Sciences. The other constituents are General Practice and Primary Care and Public Health and Health Policy.

History

The Section was established as the "Department of Psychological Medicine" in 1948/9. The name "Psychological Medicine" was adopted to reflect the department's commitment to the psychological sciences relevant to medicine - at that time, Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry. That early commitment has been maintained so that the Section of Psychological Medicine now also includes staff with expertise in behavioural medicine, neuropsychology, health psychology, and medical sociology.

The present-day Section of Psychological Medicine embodies and extends the founding ethos of the original department.

Aim

Our aim is to promote well-being through better understanding and treatment of mental health problems.

Location and staff

The main base is in accommodation shared with Greater Glasgow NHS Primary Care Division at Gartnavel Royal Hospital in the west end of the city.  The Sackler Institute of Psychobiological Research and the Glasgow Sleep Centre  are at the Southern General Hospital and we also have staff based at RHSC (Royal Hospital for Sick Children), Yorkhill.

Research

Teaching

In addition to research, the section makes a major contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and professional training. There is active involvement in the Medical Undergraduate Curriculum and Dental Undergraduate Curriculum. The Section also offers an intercalated B.Sc. (Med.Sci.) in Psychological Medicine for medical undergraduates.

The Section has a major commitment to postgraduate training. Some 85 clinical trainees are currently undertaking the Doctor of Clinical Psychology training programme (D.Clin.Psy.) and M.Sc. / Diploma in Clinical Neuropsychology. We also provide full-time and part-time research training through our PhD/MD doctoral degree programmes. The Section also provides higher training in Psychiatry, and the training of NHS staff in cognitive-behavioural therapies.
