Colin Espie is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Head of Section of Psychological Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, and Director of the University of Glasgow Sleep Centre at the Sackler Institute of Psychobiological Research. He is also Chair of the Management Committee of the Sackler Institute.  He has held, or currently holds visiting professorial appointments at University of Rochester, NY; Universite Laval, Quebec City; University of Rome, La Sapienza; and University of Sydney, Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and is on the Editorial Boards of seven leading scientific journals including Sleep (Associate Editor), Journal of Sleep Research (Deputy Editor), Behavioural Sleep Medicine, British Journal of Clinical Psychology (Associate Editor) and Behaviour Research and Therapy. He is on the Executive Committee of the British Sleep Society and is Convenor of the Insomnia Interest Group for the World Sleep Federation.

Professor Espie’s research interests include the pathophysiology of Psychophysiological Insomnia (with an emphasis upon neurocognitive processes), primary and secondary sleep disturbance (particularly sleep and depression, and sleep and cancer), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for insomnia, critical mechanisms in CBT, issues of sleep therapy compliance, and clinical effectiveness trials investigating community delivery models of insomnia care.

Research funded by the Chief Scientist Office (Scottish Executive), The Wellcome Trust, NHS Research & Development, Cancer Research UK, National Cancer Research Institutes, Economic & Social Research Council, National Health & Medical Research Council (Australia) and National Institutes of Health (USA). Infrastructure funding for the sleep research laboratory is provided by the Dr. Mortimer & Theresa Sackler Foundation.
